When business owners ask me which card maximizes rewards on everyday business spending, a solid recommendation is the American Express® Business Gold Card.
This card is built for businesses that want exceptional earning rates on common expenses like advertising, shipping, restaurants, and office supplies. If you’re spending in these categories regularly, this card can generate serious points.
Get A Strong Head Start
With the American Express Business Gold Card, you may be eligible to earn 100,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $15,000 on eligible purchases with the Business Gold Card within the first 3 months of card membership.
That’s incredible value, especially when you consider that Membership Rewards points transfer to 20+ airline and hotel partners.
The card comes with a $375 annual fee (see rates and fees). That might seem high, but the combination of adaptive earning categories and valuable credits can easily justify this cost.
Why This Card Is a Personal Favorite
The Business Gold Card is designed for simplicity and strategic earning. The card automatically identifies your top two spending categories each month and awards 4x points on those purchases.
Here are the key reasons this card stays in my wallet:
- 4x points on your top 2 categories: Automatically earn 4x Membership Rewards points on the 2 eligible categories where your business spends the most each month. Categories include U.S. purchases for advertising in select media, U.S. gas stations, U.S. restaurants, U.S. shipping providers, U.S. computer hardware, software and cloud solutions providers, and U.S. wireless telephone services purchased directly from service providers. Earn 4X points on the first $150,000 in combined purchases from these categories per calendar year, then 1x.
- 3x points on flights and hotels: Earn 3x points on flights and prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com.
- Up to $240 in statement credits annually: Earn up to $20 in statement credits monthly for eligible U.S. purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores.
- Up to $155 in Walmart+ credits annually: Get up to a $12.95* statement credit back each month after you pay for a monthly Walmart+ membership with your Platinum Card (subject to auto-renewal)
- Transfer Partners: Transfer points to 20+ airline and hotel partners including Delta, Air France-KLM, British Airways, Marriott, and Hilton.
- No Foreign Transaction Fees (see rates and fees)
- Business tools: Year-end summaries, auto-expense categorization in Intuit QuickBooks, and complimentary Vendor Pay by Bill.com membership.
The Math That Makes This Card Work
The $375 annual fee (see rates and fees) is offset by credits alone:
- Up to $240 in FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply credits: Earn up to $20 in statement credits monthly after you use the Business Gold Card for eligible U.S. purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and Office Supply Stores. This can be an annual savings of up to $240. Enrollment required
- $155 in Walmart+ credits: Receive a statement credit up to $12.95 per month plus applicable local sales tax for Walmart+ membership.
That’s up to $395 in potential annual credits. Use both and you’re actually ahead $20 on the annual fee before earning a single point.
Now add the earning power. If your business spends $5,000 monthly across your top two 4x categories (advertising, shipping, restaurants, etc.), you’re earning 240,000 Membership Rewards points annually from those categories alone.
What I Love About This Card
The adaptive earning structure is one of my biggest reasons why I recommend this card. You don’t need to activate any specific categories or track quarterly earning multipliers. The card automatically identifies where your business spends the most and awards 4x points.
This means if you’re heavy on advertising one month and shipping the next, the card adjusts. It maximizes your earning without requiring constant attention.
The FedEx and office supply credits are genuinely useful. Most companies ship packages and buy supplies regularly, so these provide real value.
The transfer partners are another huge win. Access to the same Membership Rewards program as Platinum cards means your points can go toward premium flights or hotel stays.
What You Should Know
The 4x earning caps at $150,000 in combined purchases per calendar year. After that, you’ll earn 1x. For most small businesses this won’t be an issue, but high-volume spenders should be aware.
This card doesn’t include airport lounge access or premium travel perks.
If you travel frequently and value lounge access, you’ll want to pair this with a card like the The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
You’ll also need to actively use the credits. The FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply credits require enrollment and reset monthly. The Walmart+ credit requires maintaining an auto-renewing membership.
Business Gold vs Personal Gold Card
Many people ask whether they should get the Business Gold or the American Express® Gold Card
The personal Gold Card has a $325 annual fee (see rates and fees) and focuses on consumer spending with 4x points at restaurants worldwide on up to $50k in purchases per calendar year and 4x points at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25k in purchases per calendar year. The Business Gold has a $375 annual fee (see rates and fees) and uses adaptive categories for business spending.
If you’re a business owner spending on advertising, shipping, gas stations, or software, the Business Gold makes more sense. For personal dining and groceries, choose the personal Gold. Check out my full AMEX Gold review here.
Business Gold vs Business Platinum Card
The Business Platinum Card® from American Express carries an $895 annual fee (see rates and fees) but includes lounge access to over 1,550 lounges worldwide, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits, and tons of other valuable credits and perks for the everyday business owner.
The Business Platinum earns 5x on flights and hotels (vs 3x on Business Gold) and offers 2x points on purchases of $5,000 or more on up to $2 million in combined purchases per calendar year, then 1x purchases past this.
Choose the Business Gold for strong everyday earning without premium travel perks. Choose the Business Platinum if you travel frequently. Check out my full AMEX Business Platinum review here.
Pat’s Final Take:
The American Express Business Gold Card is one of the best business cards available for everyday spending, it doesn’t require you to track rotating categories or manage complex earning structures.
The card automatically identifies where your business spends the most and awards 4X points on those categories.
The combination of adaptive earning, valuable credits that offset the annual fee, and access to Membership Rewards transfer partners makes this card a cornerstone of any business points strategy.
