That’s one of the largest business card welcome bonuses available, especially valuable when you consider that Membership Rewards points transfer to 20+ airline and hotel partners.
The card comes with an $895 annual fee (See rates and fees) which is substantial, but with the combination of travel benefits and business-specific credits, the cost can easily be justified.
Why This Card Is a Personal Favorite
The Business Platinum isn’t built for everyday earning. Instead it’s built around making running a company significantly easier, and more rewarding.
Here are the key reasons this card stays in my wallet:
- 5X points on flights: Earn 5X points when you book directly with airlines or with amextravel.com
- 5X points on prepaid hotels: When booked with amextravel.com
- 2X points on purchases of $5,000 or more: Up to $2 million in combined purchases per calendar year. This is massive for businesses making large vendor payments.
- 2X points on eligible purchases: 2X Membership Rewards® points per dollar on up to two million dollars ($2,000,000) of eligible purchases on your Card Account per calendar year, made in any of the following categories: (1) U.S. construction material and hardware suppliers, (2) U.S. electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers, (3) at U.S. shipping providers, or (4) eligible purchases of $5,000 or more. Purchases eligible for multiple categories will only receive 2X points for one category. The Math That Makes This Card Work
The $895 annual fee seems steep until you break down the credits:
- Up to $1,150 in Dell credits
- Up to $360 in Indeed credits
- Up to $200 in airline fee credits
- Up to $250 in Adobe credits
The 2x points on purchases of $5,000 or more is one of my favorite perks about the card. $100,000 in large vendor payments annually equals 200,000 Membership Rewards points.
What I Love About This Card
The Business Platinum transforms how you travel and run your business. Airport lounge access means you’re working in comfortable spaces instead of fighting for outlets at the gate.
The Dell credits are genuinely useful. The up to $1,150 in credits annually covers laptops, monitors, and equipment businesses actually need.
The WeWork membership is extremely valuable if you’re in a city with WeWork locations. Having professional workspace on-demand is worth thousands annually. Even more so if you run your business remotely.
The 35% points bonus is unique. If you’re booking flights for a team, that adds up quickly and is one of the most talked about perks of the card across the points community.
What You Should Know
This card requires some active management to maximize value, but luckily it’s a bit less you need to track than with the personal consumer card. You need to track when your Dell credits refresh semi-annually and your Adobe and Indeed credits reset quarterly.
The earning structure focuses on travel and large purchases. You’re getting 5x on flights and hotels, 2x on purchases over $5,000 with everything else earning 1x.
The card allows you to carry a balance for certain charges, but not all. Your spending limit is flexible based on your purchase, payment, and credit history.
Business Platinum vs Personal Platinum: Key Differences
Many people ask whether they should get the Business Platinum or the American Express Platinum Card®. Here’s the key difference:
Both cards offer the same types of lounge access, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits, airline fee credits, hotel elite status, and the same Membership Rewards earned on flights and hotels. The $895 annual fee (see rates and fees) is the same.
The main differences are in the credits and bonus categories:
Business Platinum unique benefits: Up to $1,150 Dell credits, up to $250 Adobe credits, up to $360 Indeed credits, 2X points on purchases of $5,000+ on up to $2 million, and 35% points.
Personal Platinum unique benefits: Up to $600 in hotel credits, up to $400 U.S. Resy dining credits, up to $320 in Uber Cash and Uber One credits, up to $209 CLEAR+ credit, and up to $100 Saks credit, along with various other credits with the likes of lululemon, Equinox, Oura Ring, and others.
If you’re a business owner who regularly purchases technology, software, and office equipment, the Business Platinum makes more sense. If you value dining credits and lifestyle perks over business expenses, go with the personal Platinum.
