The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card is one of the most rewarding hotel cards on the market and if Marriott properties are a regular part of your travel life, it can easily pay for itself many times over.
Whether you’re a road warrior racking up nights on the road, or someone who simply prefers the consistency and perks of the Marriott Bonvoy ecosystem, this card is built to reward exactly that loyalty.
That said, this isn’t the right card for everyone.
If you only stay at a Marriott property once every year or two, a lower-annual-fee option (see rates and fees) like the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy® American Express® Card may be a better fit.
But if Marriott stays are a consistent part of your life? Keep reading.
Limited Time Offer
With the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card, Earn 200,000 Marriott Bonvoy® Bonus Points after you use your new card to make $6,000 in purchases within the first 6 months of card membership. This offer ends 5/13/26.
That welcome offer translates into serious redemption potential. With Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio spanning over 30 brands and 9,000+ properties worldwide the largest footprint of any hotel loyalty program those points can cover multiple free nights at everything from budget-friendly Fairfield Inns to aspirational St. Regis or Ritz-Carlton properties.
Now, the card does carry a $650 annual fee (see rates and fees) one of the higher fees you’ll find on a hotel card.
But here’s the thing: the card can be beyond worth it, especially if you’re a Marriott Bonvoy loyalist.
Earning Rates
When it comes to earning, this card keeps things squarely within the Marriott Bonvoy ecosystem; all your points earn as Marriott Bonvoy Points rather than transferable currencies like American Express Membership Rewards.
The best earning rate comes from stays at Marriott Bonvoy properties.
- 6x Points: on eligible purchases at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy
- 3x Points: at restaurants worldwide
- 3x Points: on flights booked directly with airlines
- 2x Points: on all other eligible purchases
A Card for Marriott Bonvoy Loyalists
Of course since this card has a $650 annual fee, you’d expect it to come with plenty of perks and benefits, and luckily it does, here are some of my favorites:
- Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite Status: With complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status, you can receive room upgrades, including enhanced views or suites, when available at select properties and booked with a Qualifying Rate. Enrollment required.
- Free Night Award: Receive 1 Free Night Award every year after your Card renewal month. Award can be used for one night (redemption level at or under 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points) at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy. Certain hotels have resort fees.
- $300 Brilliant Dining Credit: Each calendar year, get up to $300 (up to $25 per month) in statement credits for eligible purchases made on the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card at restaurants worldwide.
- $100 Marriott Bonvoy Property Credit: With your Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card, receive up to a $100 property credit for qualifying charges at The Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis when you book direct using a special rate for a 2 night minimum stay.
- 25 Elite Night Credits: Each calendar year, receive 25 Elite Night Credits towards the next level of Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card Elite status. Limitations apply per Marriott Bonvoy member account. Benefit is not exclusive to Cards offered by American Express.
- Fee Credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck®: Receive either a $120 statement credit for Global Entry or a statement credit for up to $85 for TSA PreCheck® (through a TSA PreCheck official enrollment provider) for a 5-year plan. Only one credit will be given in a 4 year period for whichever application fee is charged to your Card first.
- Priority Pass Select: Get complimentary Priority Pass Select membership with access to over 1,200 airport lounges worldwide. Enrollment required.
- No Foreign Transaction Fees (see rates and fees)
Pat’s Take:
If you’re asking me personally, Platinum Elite status is the standout perk and it’s not particularly close.
To put it in perspective: The American Express Platinum Card® gets you complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold status (enrollment required), which is nice but Platinum Elite is a meaningful step above.
We’re talking enhanced room upgrade eligibility including suites, a welcome gift at check-in (points, breakfast offering, or amenity), guaranteed lounge access at hotel brands with lounges, 4pm late checkout, and a 50% bonus on base points earned during stays. If you’re spending multiple nights at Marriott properties, that status alone changes the quality of your experience in ways that are hard to put a dollar figure on.
Beyond status, the annual free night award (redeemable at properties up to 85,000 points) and the $300 dining credit which comes as $25 per month at restaurants worldwide, making it genuinely easy to use are the two benefits that can easily make the math work.
And we haven’t even factored in the current limited time offer that ends on 5/13/26.
