When people ask me which card delivers the most comprehensive travel benefits available, there’s really only one answer: the American Express Platinum Card®

This isn’t a card for casual travelers.

It’s designed for people who fly frequently, value premium experiences, and can realistically use a wide range of travel and lifestyle credits. If that describes you, this card can deliver incredible value despite a higher annual fee.

Get A Strong Head Start

With the Platinum Card from American Express, you may be eligible for as high as 175,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $12,000 in eligible purchases in your first 6 months of card membership. Welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer.

That’s one of the largest welcome bonuses for any card out there, especially valuable when you consider that Membership Rewards points transfer to 20+ airline and hotel partners.

The card comes with an $895 annual fee (See rates and fees). That’s substantial, but the benefits package can easily justify this cost for frequent travelers.

Why This Card Is a Personal Favorite

The Platinum Card isn’t built for earning points on everyday spending.

It’s built for travel perks, lounge access, and premium experiences that make frequent travel significantly more comfortable.

Here are the key reasons this card stays in my wallet:

  • 5X points on flights: Earn 5X points when you book directly with airlines or with American Express Travel ®, on up to $500,000 per calendar year.
  • 5X points on prepaid hotels: When booked with American Express Travel.
  • Global Lounge Collection Access: Access to over 1,550 airport lounges worldwide, including Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Club visits when flying Delta, and Priority Pass Select membership.
  • Up to $600 in hotel credits annually: Get up to $300 in semi-annual statement credits on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings through American Express Travel, minimum two-night stay required for the Hotel Collection credit.
  • Up to $400 Resy dining credit: Earn up to $100 per quarter in statement credits at eligible U.S. Resy restaurants.
  • Up to $200 Uber Cash + up to $120 Uber One credit: $15 in Uber Cash monthly plus $20 bonus in December, plus statement credits for an auto-renewing Uber One membership. To receive the Uber Cash benefit you must have downloaded the latest version of the Uber App and your eligible American Express Platinum Card must be a method of payment on your Uber account. The Amex Benefit may only be used in the United States.
  • Up to $300 digital entertainment credits annually: Get up to $25 in statement credits each month after you pay for eligible purchases with participating partners
  • Up to $300 lululemon credits annually: You can receive up to $75 in statement credits each quarter when you use the Card for eligible purchases at U.S. lululemon retail stores (excluding outlets) and lululemon.com.
  • Up to $155 Walmart+ credits annually: Get up to a $12.95* statement credit back each month after you pay for a monthly Walmart+ membership with your Platinum Card (subject to auto-renewal)
  • Up to $200 Oura Ring credits annually: Get up to $200 in statement credits when you use the Platinum Card to purchase an Oura Ring at Ouraring.com each calendar year.
  • Up to $300 Equinox Credits: Get up to $300 in statement credits each year at Equinox. Simply use your Platinum Card to pay for an Equinox+ digital subscription, or an Equinox club membership subject to auto-renewal.
  • Up to $100 Saks Credits: Get up to $100 in statement credits annually for purchases at Saks Fifth Avenue or saks.com on your Platinum Card . That’s up to $50 in statement credits semi-annually
  • Up to $200 airline fee credits annually: Statement credits for incidental fees charged by your selected airline.
  • Up to $209 CLEAR+ credit: Annual statement credit for CLEAR+ membership.
  • Up to $120 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit: Statement credit every 4 to 4.5 years.
  • Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits: Room upgrades, late checkout, complimentary breakfast, and property credits averaging $550 per stay.
  • Automatic Gold status: With Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors.
  • No Foreign Transaction Fees (see rates and fees)

What I Love About This Card

The $895 annual fee seems steep until you break down the credits and realize that all of the credits combined are valued at thousands of dollars, which can more than offset the cost of the annual fee.

The Platinum Card transforms how you travel. Airport lounge access means you’re relaxing at the airport with complimentary food and drinks instead of fighting for outlets at the gate.

The automatic Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors Gold status provides room upgrades and bonus points. The transfer partners give you incredible flexibility whether you’re booking premium cabin flights or hotel stays.

What You Should Know

This card does require some active management to maximize its value. You need to remember to use your credits, because if you forget about these credits, you’re leaving money on the table.

The earning structure is focused on travel. You’re getting 5x on flights booked directly with airlines or on American Express Travel, along with 5x on prepaid hotels booked through American Express Travel.

This isn’t a card for everyday spending, that’s what the American Express® Gold Card is for.

The Business Platinum Alternative

If you’re a business owner, the Business Platinum Card® from American Express may be worth looking into instead. It’s the same $895 annual fee (see rates and fees) but with business-specific benefits like up to $1,150 in Dell credits, up to $150 on U.S. purchases with Dell and an additional $1,000 statement credit  after you spend $5,000 or more on Dell purchases in a calendar year, a $250 Adobe credit after you spend $600 or more on U.S. purchases directly with Adobe in a calendar year, and 35% points bonus on employee award travel.

The Business Platinum offers 2x points on purchases of $5,000 or more (up to $2 million per calendar year), which can be incredibly valuable for large vendor payments or equipment purchases.

The Gold Card Alternative

If you’re not traveling frequently enough to justify the Platinum’s annual fee, consider the American Express Gold Card. It comes with a smaller $325 annual fee (see rates and fees) and focuses on everyday earning with 4x points at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets on up to 50,000 in purchases per calendar year.

The Gold Card delivers exceptional value for everyday spending without requiring you to use as many credits or travel as frequently. Check out my full AMEX Gold review here to see if that card makes more sense for your lifestyle.

Pat’s Final Take

The Platinum Card from American Express is arguably the best premium travel card available, especially if you travel frequently and can use many of the benefits and credits.

For frequent travelers who appreciate premium experiences and will use the hotel, dining, and lifestyle credits, this card delivers exceptional value that exceeds its $895 annual fee.

I’ve held this card for years and the combination of lounge access, Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits, and valuable credits makes every trip more comfortable and enjoyable.
